Coaching & Editing
Coaching
Writing likes company. I work with people in different ways, depending on your needs. I can help you generate writing by providing exercises that will get you in touch with stories you might not know you have in you—even though they may be stories from your own life. Or if you have an idea for a project and aren’t sure where to begin, I can help you get started. And if you have a project underway—a book, an article, a story, an essay—I can help you keep moving it forward. I offer a free 30-minute phone conversation to assess how we might work together.
I often work with people through all the stages of writing—coaching, editing, and proofreading.
Editing
Developmental or Content Editing: I comment on how you can strengthen scene, pacing, organization, character, and other narrative elements. I can do this while the first draft is being created or after a draft has been completed. I work both through conversation (on the phone or in-person) and by commenting directly into the text using the Comments and Track Changes functions in Word.
Copyediting: After your work has been fully developed, I focus on sentence level, editing for fluency, clarity, consistency of style, punctuation, spelling, typos, etc. I provide you with suggestions and corrections directly into the text using Track Changes in Word.
Proofreading
Proofreading is a lighter form of copyediting and assumes that the work needs a read-through to assure your writing is consistent in style and free from all errors. This can be especially useful to those planning to self-publish or before sending work to a publication or agent.
